When MidAmerica asked me to guest conduct on their 2027 season in Sweden I jumped at the chance. The experience working with them in 2025 in Carnegie Hall was spectacular for everyone involved and I knew I wanted to work with them again. I chose Brahms’ Ein Deutches Requiem, my favorite piece of music ever written and I can’t wait to dive into this incredible work with YOU!

Like we did for the Lauridsen Lux Aeterna last year, we’re assembling a chorus of singers from all around North America (or anywhere else in the world) who love making music together. Wether you’ve sung with me before or we’ve never met, you’re invited to be part of this incredible experience. 

We’ll spend a week rehearsing, exploring Stockholm, making new friends, and culminating in a performance of one of the greatest choral works ever written alongside the Stockholm Concert Orchestra and distinguished soloists.

This residency is open to any interested singer.You do not need to belong to a particular choir or have previously sung with me. There is no audition.

The only expectation is that singers learn the music on their own (resources provided), and arrive in Sweden excited to collaborate!

Friends, spouses, and other non-singing travelers are also welcome to participate in the residency.

Widely considered one of the greatest pieces of music ever written, the Brahms’ Requiem is less about mourning the dead than about comforting the living. Its soaring choruses, incredible orchestration, gorgeous solos, and profound message have made it one of the most beloved works in the choral repertoire. 

To make the most out of our rehearsal time, singers should arrive in Sweden fully prepared to sing all of the correct notes, rhythms, and German text without being glued to their scores. Singers should purchase their own Edition Peters score.

This will be a festival chorus made up of singers from many communities.

Some participants will come individually. Some will come with friends. Some may come with their home choir.

One of the joys of international choral festivals is getting to meet singers from across the world who quickly become friends through the shared experience of making music together.

We’re currently gathering singers and building the ensemble. If this sounds like an adventure you’d like to be a part of, please fill out the form. Do I need to audition?  No, it’s open to anyone.

Can spouses/friends come?  Absolutely. 

Can my choir participate together?   Yes! Any choir sending 10 or more participants can participate together. If you have fewer than 10 you can sign up through Don. 

Can I room with someone I know?   Yes. Rooming requests will happen in early 2027.

Can I request a single room?   Yes. 

What edition should I buy?  The Edition Peters (linked above)

When should I buy airfare?   Don’t purchase airfare until the concert is confirmed. 

How much rehearsal happens before Sweden?   There will be a few virtual rehearsals before our trip but 90% of the learning will need to happen individually. You will have tracks, pronunciation guides, and other helpful resources. 

How much German do I need?   You don’t need to speak any German but we will focus on excellent pronunciation.
